iPhone OS 3.1 Might Come with Augmented Reality
0 comments 12:33 PM Posted by Speaking in BlogLabels: gadget
The iPhone OS 3.1 should come towards users with some very attractive and new features, one of which would be the presence/support of augmented reality applications. The functionality has already been rumored, and we're sure that enthusiasts we'll be happy in case it arrives. According to the LA Times, given the fact that early September might bring forth this great feature, we'll learn quite soon whether it is so or not.
To be more precise, LA Times says that Acrossair developers have stated not only that the augmented reality applications are on their way towards iPhone and iPod touch users with the upcoming iPhone OS 3.1, but that the full-screen video features of the software solution won't become available before the platform lands on the market.
It seems that there is an unpublished camera API that should enable the feature, and that this API will not come before the iPhone OS 3.1. This is why other solutions to bring augmented reality on the iPhone haven't surfaced until now either. Hopefully, the upcoming OS flavor will include what it takes for all this great functionality to deliver a new user experience to any iPhone or iPod touch owner.
On the other hand, the Unofficial Apple Weblog reports that a developer has already stated that the “3.1 update will not provide additional hooks for AR apps; specifically, that the live camera view APIs are going to remain private and will not be exposed for third-party development. This source suggests that Acrossair is confused about Apple's position, and that the approval schedule aligning with 3.1 is a coincidence and not a technical restraint.”
As for what the augmented reality actually is, for those who are not familiar with the term, it deals with the combination of real-world and computer-generated data. Basically, live video imagery is digitally processed and “augmented” through the inclusion of graphics generated by computer. Stay tuned to learn whether it will actually come along with iPhone 3.1 or not.

HTC high-end Mobile Phone
0 comments 2:04 PM Posted by Speaking in BlogLabels: gadget, mobile
HTC Firestone is one high-end mobile phone coming from the Taiwanese company HTC Corporation that hasn't been yet unveiled, but that has already made it into the wild. A new photo of the device has recently surfaced to the web, showing a capacitive screen on the media-centric device, and offering us the possibility to observe what the phone might look like.
In case the handset in the picture proves to be the real deal, we must say that it will be a good-looking phone, which is reportedly featuring large speakers in front and on the back, as well as an externally accessible, hot-swappable microSD memory card slot. The photo has emerged via wmpoweruser, which also stated that the Firestone and the HTC Leo that was spotted only recently over the Internet might be one and the same handset.
This might end up being only a mere supposition in the end, yet anything is possible. For what it's worth, the HTC Firestone could turn out to be the powerful Windows Mobile-based handset that the HTC Leo was already rumored to be, as it should come to the market with Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform, which means a 1GHz processor, coupled with an enhanced graphic performance and great connectivity options.
Hopefully, the HTC Firestone/Leo will prove to live up to the expectations, and the 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen display, as well as the 5MP camera with auto focus and dual LED flash will come to the market along with it. Moreover, it seems that the phone might land on the shelves as soon as the third quarter of the ongoing year, with Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system right from the start, which means that it should be even more attractive. Stay tuned to learn more details on the device, as soon as they become available.
